Random synaptic firings

music: none
mood: tired

Does anyone remember that little tutorial that Macs had waaaaay back in the day to teach people how to use this newfangled Mac GUI and mouse thingy? It had a little mouse exercise where you clicked on a container of fish food, dragged it over a bowl, and fed the little fish inside.

Am I the only one who remembers this crap?

My brain bleeds

music: System of a Down - Lost in Hollywood
mood: annoyed

Me: *asks her if her VPN connection is up and running. She says it is.*
Me: "Ok, let's see if you can see the server. Go to Start, Run, and type two backslashes, which is the one above your enter key."
Her: *sounds of shuffling, pecking keys* "Oh, wait...." *shuffle, click* "backslash...backslash."
Me: "Did you find it?"
Her: "Yes. Backslash backslash. That's hard to say."
Me: "Yep. Okay. Now after those backslashes please type ABC hyphen SERVER zero one (\\ABC-SERVER01). So all in all you have backslash backslash ABC, hyphen, SERVER, the number zero, the number one. Then press enter or click OK."
Her: *clickyclicky* ........................................ *click click clickity* ........................................
Me: "Got it?"
Her: "All one word?"
Me: "All one word."
Her: "It says the network path was not found. Backslash backslash ABC zero one."
Me: "That's not right. It should be backslash backslash ABC hyphen SERVER zero one."
Her: "ABC SERVER one."
Me: "backslash backslash ABC hyphen SERVER zero one."
Her: "The network path was not found."
Me: "You have backslash backslash ABC hyphen SERVER zero one?"
Her: "....no."
Me: *headdesk*
Me: "Okay STOP. Erase what you've got in there. Now listen very carefully and type: backslash...backslash...A...B...C...hyphen...S...E...R...V...E...R...zero...one."
Her: "It's thinking.... nope. Not found."
Me: "Are you sure your VPN connection is running? Is the little gold padlock there by your clock?"
Her: "No, it's not there anymore!"
me: *shoots self in face*

For a moment there I forgot the Cardinal Rule of Technical Support: "Verily, thou shalt not take unto thine heart any words spoken by the Luser, for I say unto thee, their mouths spout naught but excrement." Hmph...Their brains are naught but excrement...

Adventures to follow

music: Rocket From The Crypt - Maybelline
mood: indifferent

Next month I will be taking my first business trip. Unfortunately it will be to a state that I would just as soon avoid altogether. The words "armpit" and "America" come to mind. Also, "of."

I'm being a good little OCD freak and checking out the TSA list of what you can and cannot bring. I'm going to have to go home tonight and write up a list of what I plan to bring and do some cross-referencing. I haven't travelled by plane in over a year and a half so I'm a little worried about what's actually going to go down in the security line.

I got the info on the hotel I'm going to be staying at. At least it's got a restaurant. Still don't know about the flight or the rental car.

HAAAAAAAUUUGHHH is the day over yet?

music: George Michael - Praying For Time
mood: exhausted

I've been solidly kicking ass at work since 7:00 AM. I am ready for the day to be over now.

On a side note, I don't think I'll ever drink alcohol again. After two lowballs of Disaronno on the rocks I was feeling good. Warm, pleasant, mellow -- the good kind of drunk. A few hours and a nap later and I felt like I wanted to die. I was hungover for the rest of the night. We watched Aeon Flux (interesting plot, eh on the execution) and Capote (what a terrible human being) and I could barely focus on either movie.

I feel like a big pile of crap today. I hope they don't try to kill us at practice tonight.

I wish they could bottle common sense

music: George Michael - Freedom
mood: sigh

Here's what you need to know about our work computers:

Back up your data on a regular basis. Especially if you have a laptop. When (not if) your hard drive crashes/Windows has an unrecoverable conniption/you get a virus that wipes out everything, I will laugh at you when you whine about your lost files. You have a network drive for a reason.

When you delete an email in Outlook, a reasonable, sane person would infer that you do not need that particular email anymore -- ever. Regardless of whether it ends up in the Deleted Items folder. Deleted means deleted. Gone. If you whine to me that you accidentally emptied your Deleted Items folder and you were storing something in there for future reference, I will laugh at you. I will laugh harder if you also have a PST set up for email storage.

Finally...a moment

music: TV - the news
mood: I don't care about the MN Vikings

It's a beautiful day, Dan's at a company event, and I don't have practice tonight. So I'm gonna sit on the couch and fiddle with my laptop.

Last week Dan and I tried vegetarianism on for size. I admit I'm finding it a little hard to go back to meat. I was worried about two things: nutrition and hunger. I never once felt undernourished (in fact, I had a ton of energy) and I certainly wasn't starving at any point. I think we actually ate better last week than we had in the last few months. I think I could handle more than one week a month (our current plan) of that. The only thing that was weird was that our bodies took time...adjusting....to certain...things....and timings..... But that started to work itself out in the last few days.

I've been informed of an all-class reunion for my high school's 50th (?) anniversary. Will I go? Maybe.

I should have been a scientist, pt. II

music: none
mood: amazed

They're taking pictures of atoms.

atoms.

I always wanted to be a microbiologist. Looking at teeny things has always fascinated me. I remember the first time I looked into a microscope at school in the fourth grade. Smearing cheek cells and dropping pondwater onto a slide always stirred up an excitement in me that I've never really been able to reproduce.
