Norway 2002
Second day at Oslo

The second day was brighter and warmer.  We had to go to another hotel to get our breakfast since this was the 2nd day after the end of a big hotel strike and our hotel as yet had no food in its restaurant.  The hotel around the corner was part of the same chain so we ate there.  We had breakfast every day as part of the hotel package and dinner was included also on three or four of the days.-------»   Breakfast in Norway hotels was usually a combination of freshly baked breads of several types, an assortment of meats and cheeses, an assortment of flatbreads and crackers, cereal, yogurt, fresh and/or dried fruits, scrambled eggs, wiener like sausages, baked beans, and an assortment of juices, milks, teas and coffee.

Walking paths in Oslo

After breakfast we packed up our cameras and headed out for more exploring.  After a quick look round the area we started out up the hill to the kings house.  (Black line on map headed right to  left!)   Kings Home (33591 bytes)Sharon commented on how unusual it was to be able to walk right up to the front door of the palace.  One guard stood at a guard box near the entrance and one along the side.  No other security was visible.  A man with a guitar case on his back rode a bicycle on the path right  next to the side of the building.-----»   After wandering around the palace grounds we decided to walk on up to Frogner Park.  This is a large park with lots of chris-crossed paths through the trees and around the lakes.  In the center is the Vigeland sculpture gardens with a large monolith Monolith (33669 bytes) depicting the struggle of mankind surrounded with many carved granite sculptures showing the ages of mankind from frolicking youth to an aged couple.

Young Family (27573 bytes)        Mother Ride (30990 bytes)       Children Playing (30775 bytes)           Gene Beside (24845 bytes)        Grandmother, Granddaughter (27677 bytes)

We spent a good deal of time walking around looking at all the carvings.  At the monolith and elsewhere in the park there were classes of grade school kids, all with various art materials drawing various sculptures, fountains or other designs found in the park.  They appeared to be free to go where they pleased and to work alone or in groups without much supervision. Goofing Off (22662 bytes) Surprisingly "most" of them seemed to be pretty well centered on their tasks.  After a few minutes rest in the shade (It was getting to be a WARM day) we moved on to the large fountain below the monolith.  -----»      It was also surrounded by an array of bronze statuary.  Fountain (46520 bytes)The fountain theme was carried across a  bridge and into the flower gardens on the other side of a small lake.  There is an open air restaurant in the garden where we had a light lunch in the shade of some tall maple trees.  We then found a trolley (22NOK, $2.86 each) that took us back to the train station (blue line on map) and a short walk back to the hotel.
