Deadmines Quest Series

(MAP)

[Jump to Travelogue]

Defias Brotherhood:

  1. Start at Gryan Stoutmantle on the steps of Sentinel Hill Tower in Westfall.  Before you leave Westfall, be sure you have your flight path from Thor the Gryphon Master.
  2. Stoutmantle will send you to Wiley the Black, who is upstairs at the Inn in Lakeshire, Redridge Mountains. The Inn is on the west edge of town.  As you enter town, be sure you pick up the flight path from Ariena Stormfeather.  She is on the west side of the road on the south side of the bridge.
  3. Wiley gives you a note to take back to Gryan Stoutmantle.  If you got the flightpaths, this is a quick trip back.
  4. Gryan Stoutmantle then sends you to Mathias Shaw, at SI:7 in Old Town, Stormwind City.
  5. Shaw gives you a report to return to Gryan Stoutmantle back at Sentinel Hill.
  6. Stoutmantle then sends you to find and kill the Defias Messenger.  Yes, this is a case where you really DO shoot the messenger.  He spawns in Moonbrook, walks North up the road, heads off the road west into Gold Coast quarry, returns to the road and goes north again to Jangolode Mine.  If he has survived that long he returns to Moonbrook.  I have chased all over the place looking for him, but I find it is just easier to camp Moonbrook at the point the road angles down the main street.  He will spawn there if killed, or wander past there in short order if not.  After you kill and loot the messenger, return to Gryan Stoutmantle
  7. Stoutmantle directs you to the Defias Traitor.  When you accept the mission from the Traitor you will need to escort him to the Defias Hideout in Moonbrook.  You need to stay in close proximity with the Traitor or you will fail the quest.  When you get to Moonbrook, it is possible that you will have to fight your way through the Defias mobs to the hideout.  Your job is to keep him alive to reach that point.  But normally 1 of 2 things will happen instead.  First, and most desirable, the town will be filled with Alliance either farming or preparing for the Deadmines trip.  In that case, you can usually walk straight to the hideout and complete with little or no combat.  The second thing is undesirable:  Horde may have taken up residence there playing “Snipe the Traitor”.  This is usually done by a solo rogue, or a rogue and a couple companions.  They seem to think it is fun to disrupt your quest.  Here you usually have 2 options.  You can go do something else for a couple hours and come back to see if they have tired of their game (who says kids these days have short attention spans!!) or you can call on all your high-level friends to counter-gank the rogue and his buddies when they hit the traitor.  The latter option is usually best if the people are on.
  8. Return to Gryan Stoutmantle and he will give you the quest to bring him the Head of VanCleef.  VanCleef is the final boss in Deadmines.

Red Silk Bandanas

After you finish the Defias Traitor (Step 7 of Defias Brotherhood), you will also have a quest available from Scout Riell.  He stands next to Stoutmantle on the steps of Sentinel Hill Tower.  Collect 10 Red Silk Bandana and return to the Quest giver.  These can be collected off all the various Defias outside and inside the instance.

Collecting Memories & Oh Brother

  1. Both are done outside the instance at Deadmines.   Both are also given by and completed at Wilder Thistlenettle.  He is found in Stormwind Dwarven District.  When you first enter the Deadmine tunnels from the building in Moonbrook, bear left.  There is a section of caves that appears a different color on your minimap.  Head toward those.  When you start seeing undead you are in the right section.
  2. Collecting Memories: To complete this quest you need to collect 4 Miners’ Union Cards.  The drop the undead miners there.
  3. Foreman Tistlenettle is the named undead at the end of this section of tunnels.  You need to loot Thistlenettle’s Badge off him and return it to Wilder in Stormwind Dwarven District.

Underground Assault

  1. Technically, this quest start with Gnoam in Ironforge Tinkertown with quest “Speak to Shoni”.  But this step can be skipped.  The reward is 25-250 xp
  2. You actually start the quest with Shoni the Shilent, who is north of the forge in Stormwind Dwarven District at 55.12.  You need to destroy Sneed’s Shredder and kill Sneed.  He is the second miniboss in Deadmines.  Be sure to loot the Shredder.  That is where the power supply is.

The Unsent Letter

This quest begins with “An Unsent Letter” looted from VanCleef.  It starts a very extensive series of quests carrying you through The Stockades, and ending at Stormwind Castle, with quests up to level 31.  It is a must for XP and Stormwind faction.

Your Fortune Awaits you

This is a series of quests given by Sayge at the Darkmoon Faire.  The chest is just inside the instance.  You need to proceed partway down the tunnel and head back. toward the instace entrance.

Deadmines Travelogue

Here’s how you minimize your running time.  There are 2 tracks you can take to complete these series.  Ignore “Your Fortune Awaits you”, as it is not a standard Deadmines quest and is available at level 35.  The first route assumes you will be starting from Ironforge and picking up the intro quest to Underground Assault.  The second assumes a start in Stormwind City.  Both assume you do not have flightpaths initially:

  • Starting in Ironforge, Proceed to Tinkertown.  This is the zone exactly opposite The Gates of Ironforge.
  • Talk to Gnoam and take the quest “Speak to Shoni”.
  • You are right next to the entrance to Deeprun Tram.  That is the instance that heads out the tunnel to the East.  Enter the instance and get on the first available tram.
  • Ride the Tram and get off on the Stormwind side.  Exit the instance, and you will find yourself in Stormwind Dwarven District.
  • You should see the quest dot for Shoni the Shilent right away.  Go talk to Shoni, complete “Speak to Shoni” and take “Underground Assault”.
  • Find Wilder Thistlenettle in one of the buildings in the southeast corner of the Dwarven district.  Talk to him and take both “Collecting Memories” and “Oh Brother…”.
  • Go to the southeast corner of the Trade District, and find Dungar Longdrink, the Gryphon Master.  Obtain the Flight Path for Stormwind from him.
  • The quickest way out of Stormwind is to run off the balcony to the southeast and jump in the canal outside wall.  Continue to swim southeast and leave the water by the NPC fishing there.  Run up the ramp to the road, and turn left out of town.
  • You are now in Elwynn Forest.  Proceed down the road to the southeast until you reach Goldshire.  In Goldshire, the road branches in 4 directions: East, West, Northeast and Nortwest.  You want to leave to the west.  Follow the road to avoid aggressive mobs.
  • You will eventually cross over into Westfall.  Continue following the road to the south.  When the road branches south and west, stay to the left on the south branch.  You will soon reach Sentinel Hill.
  • Stop off at Thor, the Gryphon Master to get the flight path.  Then proceed up the hill to the steps of the tower.
  • Talk to Gryan Stoutmantle and accept the quest “Defias Brotherhood”.  He will send you to Lakeshire in Redridge Mountains.
  • If you have the flight path to Lakeshire, Great!  Take that and skip ahead.  If not, keep reading.
  • Reverse your course, and head out of Sentinel Hill to the north.  Follow the road all the way to Elwynn Forest, remembering to stay on the road to minimize hostile mobs.
  • Pass completely through Elwynn Forest to the East: when in Goldshire, stay on the road to the east.
  • Shortly after you enter the Redridge Mountains, you will reach an area called Tri Corners.  Be careful in this area, as hostile mobs do not respect the road here.
  • Continue on the east branch to the second fork, just after the road dips to the south.  The main road continues back to the north while a path leads south and east.  Go north up the ridge.
  • After you crest the ridge, but before the bridge, you will find Ariena Stormfeather the Gryphon Master.  Stop and get the flight path from her.  Continue on to the main row of buildings on the north side of the bridge.
  • Wiley the Black is upstairs in the end at the end of the row of buildings on the right.  If you get to the farm, you have gone too far.  Turn around and go back.
  • Wiley then sends you back to Gryan Stoutmantle.  Return to Ariena Stormfeather and ride the Gryphon back to Sentinel Hill.
  • Gryan will then send you to Mathias Shaw.  Take the Gryphon back to Stormwind.  When you leave the Gryphon Master by the normal route (by the ramp) you continue north until you reach an archway to the east.  Go through there and cross the bridge that is right there across the canal, and go through the Arch on the other side into Old Town.  Take an immediate right and follow the street to the southernmost building.  There are 2 vendors standing outside.  Enter the courtyard and continue straight ahead (after walking around the wall that is just inside the arch) to the SI:7 Headquarters.  You will find Mathias Shaw inside and upstairs.
  • Shaw then sends you back to Gryan Stoutmantle.  Go back to the Gryphon and fly to Sentinel Hill.
  • Stoutmantle then sends you looking for the Defias Messenger.  He wanders a path you can see on the linked Map.  It is often easier just to go to the first intersection in Moonbrook and watch for him to spawn there.  Be sure to use the road to avoid unnecessary agro.
  • After killing the messenger, return to Stoutmantle and get the final prep quest.  He will send you to the Defias Traitor to seek out the hideout.  After you follow him to Moonbrook, you will need to return to Stoutmantal 1 more time to complete the Traitor quest and pick up the final quest for VanCleef’s head.
  • Before leaving the tower area, talk to Scout Riell, and pick up the quest “Red Silk Bandanas”.

You are now ready to proceed to Deadmines and run all the available quests.

Second Travelogue coming soon.
