“THE GOD IS” SERIES

GOD IS OMNIPOTENT - ALL POWERFUL

Mike Barnett ~ September 21, 2008

·        Last week we looked at the character of God and established that God is just not on his thrown in Heaven, but he also dwells in his worshippers through the Holy Spirit.

·        Jesus said: “The Kingdom of God is inside you”.

·        With that concept in mind we will continue this morning our study on the character and attributes of God.

·        GOD IS ALL OMNI POTENT AND POWERFUL

·        WE ARE NOT GOING TO LOOK AT WHY GOD IS POWERFUL OR HOW GOD IS POWERFUL – HE JUST IS POWERFUL.

·        KNOWBODY KNOWS THE HOWS AND WHYS OF GOD.

·        GOD SAYS “I AM THAT I AM”.

·        HE IS WHO HE IS!

1.      GOD IS OMNIPOTENT WHICH MEANS GOD IS ALL ___________________(POWERFUL) – GOD IS NOT LIMITED AND THERE IS NOTHING HE CANNOT DO OR ACCOMPLISH. ALL THINGS ARE __________________(POSSIBLE) WITH GOD!

Jeremiah 10:6-13 (pg. 543) says:

6 No one is like you, O LORD;
       you are great,
       and your name is mighty in power.

 7 Who should not revere you,
       O King of the nations?
       This is your due.
       Among all the wise men of the nations
       and in all their kingdoms,
       there is no one like you.

 8 They are all senseless and foolish;
       they are taught by worthless wooden idols.

 9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish
       and gold from Uphaz.
       What the craftsman and goldsmith have made
       is then dressed in blue and purple—
       all made by skilled workers.

10 But the LORD is the true God;
       he is the living God, the eternal King.
       When he is angry, the earth trembles;
       the nations cannot endure his wrath.

 11 "Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.' " [a]

 12 But God made the earth by his power;
       he founded the world by his wisdom
       and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

 13 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;
       he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
       He sends lightning with the rain
       and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

·        The prophet Jeremiah is declaring how powerful God is and how foolish it is to make idols out of wood and gold that are worshipped as God.

·        What idols do you give power to?

·        Are you trusting your own intelligence or the intelligence of this world?

·        Is there something that you are declaring that is more powerful than God either consciously or subconsciously?

·        If there is, then that thing or person has become an idol for you.

·        In truth God alone is all powerful

  Jeremiah 32:17 (pg. 561) says:

 17 "Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. 18 You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the fathers' sins into the laps of their children after them. O great and powerful God, whose name is the LORD Almighty, 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to all the ways of men; you reward everyone according to his conduct and as his deeds deserve.

Psalm 147:5 says:

5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
       his understanding has no limit.

·        God is all powerful- all things are possible with him!

 Mark 10:25-29 (pg. 716) says:

Jesus said,

25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

 26The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?"

 27Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."

·        God is a powerful God

2. GOD ________________(SPOKE) TO NOTHINGNESS AND IT __________________(OBEYED) HIM AND BECAME WHAT GOD SAID!

·        He created the Universe and everything in it by speaking it into existence.

“LET IT BE SO”

Genesis 1:1-31 says:

1 In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth.

 2 Now the earth was [a] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

 6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

 9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

 14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

 20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

 24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

 27 So God created man in his own image,
       in the image of God he created him;
       male and female he created them.

 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

3. GOD’S POWER IS CONTAINED IN HIS_____________(WORD) – THE BIBLE!

Proverbs 30:5 says:

 5 "Every word of God is flawless;
       he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Isaiah 55:8-11 says:

8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
       neither are your ways my ways,"
       declares the LORD.

 9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth,
       so are my ways higher than your ways
       and my thoughts than your thoughts.

 10 As the rain and the snow
       come down from heaven,
       and do not return to it
       without watering the earth
       and making it bud and flourish,
       so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,

 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
       It will not return to me empty,
       but will accomplish what I desire
       and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Romans 1:16 says:

16I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

THERE IS POWER IN THE WORD OF GOD!

Hebrews 1:3 says:

3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of
