GOD IS OMNIPOTENT - ALL POWERFUL
Mike Barnett ~ September 21, 2008

Last week we
looked at the character of God and established that God is just not on his
thrown in Heaven, but he also dwells in his worshippers through the Holy
Spirit.

Jesus said:

With that
concept in mind we will continue this morning our study on the character and
attributes of God.

GOD IS ALL OMNI
POTENT AND POWERFUL
·
WE ARE NOT
GOING TO LOOK AT WHY GOD IS POWERFUL OR HOW GOD IS POWERFUL – HE JUST IS
POWERFUL.

GOD SAYS “I
AM THAT I AM”.

HE IS WHO HE

1. GOD IS OMNIPOTENT WHICH MEANS GOD IS ALL
___________________(POWERFUL) – GOD IS NOT LIMITED AND THERE IS NOTHING HE CANNOT
DO OR ACCOMPLISH. ALL THINGS ARE __________________(POSSIBLE) WITH GOD!
Jeremiah 10:6-13 (pg. 543) says:
6 No one is like you, O LORD;
you are great,
and your name is mighty in power.
7 Who should
not revere you,
O King of the nations?
This is your due.
Among all the wise men of the nations
and in all their kingdoms,
there is no one like you.
8 They are
all senseless and foolish;
they are taught by worthless wooden idols.
9 Hammered
silver is brought from Tarshish
and gold from Uphaz.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made
is then dressed in blue and purple—
all made by skilled workers.
10 But the LORD is the true God;
he is the living God, the eternal King.
When he is angry, the earth trembles;
the nations cannot endure his wrath.
11
"Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth,
will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.' " [a]
12 But God
made the earth by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom
and stretched out the heavens by his
understanding.
13 When he
thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;
he makes clouds rise from the ends of the
earth.
He sends lightning with the rain
and brings out the wind from his
storehouses.
·
The prophet
Jeremiah is declaring how powerful God is and how foolish it is to make idols
out of wood and gold that are worshipped as God.
·
What idols do
you give power to?
·
Are you trusting
your own intelligence or the intelligence of this world?
·
Is there
something that you are declaring that is more powerful than God either
consciously or subconsciously?
·
If there is,
then that thing or person has become an idol for you.
·
In truth God
alone is all powerful
Jeremiah 32:17 (pg. 561) says:
17 "Ah,
Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and
outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. 18 You
show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the fathers' sins into the
laps of their children after them. O great and powerful God, whose name is the
LORD Almighty, 19 great are your purposes and mighty are
your deeds. Your eyes are open to all the ways of men; you reward everyone
according to his conduct and as his deeds deserve.
Psalm 147:5 says:
5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.

God is all
powerful- all things are possible with him!

all things are possible with God."

He created
the Universe and everything in it by speaking it into existence.
“LET IT BE SO”
Genesis 1:1-31 says:
1 In the beginning God created the Heavens and the
earth.
2 Now the
earth was [a] formless and empty, darkness was over the
surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God
said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4
God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he
called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the
first day.
4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated
the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light
"day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was
evening, and there was morning—the first day.
6 And God
said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from
water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the
water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was
evening, and there was morning—the second day.
9 And God
said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry
ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the
dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called
"seas." And God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, "Let the land produce
vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed
in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12
The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and
trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that
it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was
morning—the third day.
14 And God
said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day
from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years,
15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to
give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God
made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light
to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set
them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18
to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God
saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and
there was morning—the fourth day.
20 And God
said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above
the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God
created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with
which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird
according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22
God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill
the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
24 And God
said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds:
livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each
according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made
the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their
kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their
kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God
said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule
over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all
the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along
the ground."
27 So God
created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 God
blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill
the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air
and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
29 Then God
said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth
and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the
air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the
breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.
31 God saw
all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there
was morning—the sixth day.
3. GOD’S POWER IS CONTAINED
IN HIS_____________(WORD) – THE BIBLE!
Proverbs 30:5 says:
5
"Every word of God is flawless;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in
him.
Isaiah 55:8-11 says:
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,"
declares the LORD.
9 "As
the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 As the
rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and
bread for the eater,
11 so is my
word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent
it.
Romans
16I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the
power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew,
then for the Gentile.
THERE IS POWER IN THE
WORD OF GOD!
Hebrews 1:3 says:
3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact
representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After
he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the
Majesty in heaven.
Hebrews 4:12-13 says:
12For the word of God is living and active. Sharper
than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit,
joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight.
Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must
give account.
Jeremiah 23:28-29 says:
28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream, but
let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with
grain?" declares the LORD. 29 "Is not my word
like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock
in pieces?
·
God’s power
is unleashed through the spoken word.
Romans
17Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,
and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
Matthew 7:24-27 says:
24"Therefore
everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a
wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain
came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house;
yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put
them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and
beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
4) THERE IS NO SEPARATION
BETWEEN GOD AND HIS WORD – THE _____________(WORD) IS _________(GOD) AND GOD IS
THE WORD!
John 1:1-5,14
(pg. 750) says:
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the
beginning.
3Through him
all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not
understood[a] it.
14The Word
became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory
of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and
truth.
1 Peter 1:20-25 (pg. 857)
says:
20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but
was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through
him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so
your faith and hope are in God.
22Now that
you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love
for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.[a] 23For you
have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the
living and enduring word of God.
5) GOD’S WORD IS LIKE A
POWERFUL ___________(SEED) THAT WE ARE TO _____________(PLANT) IN OUR
________________(HEARTS).
Luke 8:5-15 (pg. 731) says:
5"A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was
scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the
birds of the air ate it up. 6Some fell on rock, and when
it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7Other
seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a
crop, a hundred times more than was sown."
When he said this, he called out, "He
who has ears to hear, let him hear."
9His
disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10He said,
"The knowledge of the secrets of the
" 'though seeing, they may not see;
though hearing, they may not understand.'[a]
11"This
is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12Those
along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away
the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy
when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the
time of testing they fall away. 14The seed that fell
among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are
choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and
good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

All of us are
planting words into our Hearts by faith.

Either it is
the Devil’s word or God’s Word.

When you tell
yourself. “God supplies all my needs and I do not worry about tomorrow because
God knows my needs before I do and the abundance I need is already here in my

righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[a] just as it is written: "The righteous
will live by faith."[b]

PLANTING THE WORD IN OUR HEARTS, WE ARE TO ______________(SPEAK) FORTH THE

·
JESUS SPOKE
TO PEOPLE, TREES AND THINGS AND THEY OBEYED HIM.
Matthew
18Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy,
and he was healed from that moment.
19Then the
disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it
out?"
20He
replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you
have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from
here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."[a]
22When they came together in Galilee, he said to them,
"The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.

Jesus spoke
God’s Word to the devil and the devil left him alone.
Matthew 4:1-11 says:
1Then
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of
God, tell these stones to become bread."
4Jesus
answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every
word that comes from the mouth of God.'[a]"
5Then the
devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the
temple. 6"If you are the Son of God," he said,
"throw yourself down. For it is written:
" 'He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'[b]"
7Jesus
answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'[c]"
8Again, the
devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world and their splendor. 9"All this I will give
you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."
10Jesus said
to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your
God, and serve him only.'[d]"
11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended
him.

Jesus spoke
to the Devil and the Devil left him without getting a foothold.

When Jesus

BELIEVERS
HAVE THE SAME AUTHORITY TO SPEAK GOD’S WORD WHICH CONTAINS HIS POWER.
7. JESUS GAVE HIS
DISCIPLES THE AUTHORITY TO _________________(SPEAK) GOD’S ____________(WORD) TO
PROBLEMS AND PROMISED THEY WOULD HAVE _________________(POWERFUL) RESULTS.
Mark 11:20-24 (pg. 717) says:
20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig
tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and
said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!" 22"Have[a] faith in God," Jesus answered. 23"I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain,
'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes
that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24Therefore
I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it,
and it will be yours.
Luke 17:3-6 (Pg. 741) says:
3"If your brother sins, rebuke him,
and if he repents, forgive him. 4If he sins against you
seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,'
forgive him."
5The
apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"
6He replied,
"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this

Matthew 18:18-19 says:
18"I
tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be[a]bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be[b] loosed in heaven.
19"Again,
I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it
will be done for you by my Father in heaven.

EVERYTHING A CHRISTIAN SPEAKS COMES TO PASS?
8) GOD GIVES PROTECTION,
PROVISIONS AND POWER TO HIS CHILDREN IN ____________(SEED) FORM (THE WORD OF
GOD IS LIKE A SEED) AND IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ________________(PLANT) THE
SEED IN OUR ________________(HEARTS) BEFORE WE ________________(SPEAK) IT

For example, King David
knew that God’s Word was powerful seed and he planted it in his heart, so it
could grow from the inside out.
Psalm 46 (pg. 403) says:
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

we will not fear, though the earth give way

the sea,

waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their
