THE PRAYER OUTLINE JESUS GAVE HIS DISCIPLES – LUKE
11:1-13:
1One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he
finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just
as John taught his disciples."
2He said to
them, "When you pray, say:
" 'Father,[a]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.[b]
3Give us each day our daily bread.
4Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins
against us.[c]
And lead us not into temptation.[d]' "
5Then he
said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at
7"Then
the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my
children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' 8I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread
because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness[e] he will get up and give him as much as he
needs.
9"So I
say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and
the door will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks
receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
11"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[f] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy
Spirit to those who ask him!"
1. Honor and Worship God.
STEP # 1 - V.
2a – "Father, hallowed be your name", represents the Worship
and Praise segment.
2. Surrender your will to God.
STEP # 2 - V.
2b - "Your kingdom come, your will be done", represents the surrender
segment.
3. Ask God for your needs and desires.
STEP # 3 - V. 3
– "Give us each day our daily bread", represents the petition
segment.
4. Ask for forgiveness for your sins and
give forgiveness to those who have sinned against you.
STEP # 4 - V.
4a – "Forgive our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against
us", represents the forgiveness segment.
5. Ask for protection from sin.
STEP #5 - V. 4b
-"And lead us not into temptation", represents the "focused
mind & heart" segment.
6. Be persistently tenacious and do not
give up.
Luke 11:5 - 8 - The persistence
segment.
NOTE: As a "Christ
follower", it is my responsibility is to keep praying until the prayer has
been answered, redirected by the Spirit, or the burden lifted.
7. Be specific in detailing what you
want.
STEP # 7 – Luke 11: 9-13 – The "specific
request" segment.
TRUTH: Many professing Christians ask God for their
needs but never practice the other elements of a vital prayer life such as
Worship, Thanksgiving, Surrender, Forgiveness, “Seeking Protection/Wisdom” and
Perseverance and therefore never really experience the fullness of God’s power
in prayer.

he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his

2 Elisha
replied to her, "How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your
house?"
"Your servant has nothing there at
all," she said, "except a little oil."
3 Elisha
said, "Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don't ask for
just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind
you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to
one side."
5 She left
him and afterward shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars
to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were
full, she said to her son, "Bring me another one."
But he replied, "There is not a jar
left." Then the oil stopped flowing.
7 She went
and told the man of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts.
You and your sons can live on what is left."
OBSERVATIONS
FROM 2 KINGS 4:1-7
·
The wife of a
man who was traveling with Elisha and the other prophets cried out to Elisha,
“My husband is dead. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.
·
In those days
if you had unpaid debt, your children could be claimed as “servant slaves” to
work off the past due debt.
·
Elisha asked
her: “How can I help you?”
·
Often times,
Jesus also asked people similar questions like: “What do you want me to do for
you?
·
Note: Again
and again God ask us to be specific in our prayers in asking Him for what we
need, want and desire.
·
Before the
widow could answer the question, Elisha asked her: “What do you have in your
house?”
·
Like God,
Elisha already knew her hearts desire and saved her a step in the process.
·
Sometimes God
does that too because he is for us and not against us!
·
She
responded: “I just have a little oil”.
·
Elisha, then
responded by saying, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars…and
don’t ask for just a few either”.
·
He then tells
her to go inside and shut the door behind her and pour the oil into the jars.
·
The impending
miracle was not intended to be a public sensation for the masses, but to
demonstrate privately God’s mercy and grace to this widow.
·
Jesus too
shut the door behind him when he raised the little girl from the dead.
·
There is a
good reason for this.
·
Sometimes the
doubt and unbelief of family, friends and neighbors will hinder our faith when
they tell us how impossible our situation is and that nothing will
change.
·
The widow did
not hesitate to respond to the instructions of the Lord’s prophet in faith and
obedience.
·
In faith she
did what Elisha, the prophet told her to do and borrowed as many empty jars as
possible and filled the jars with oil.
·
She filled
all the jars until there was no more in front of her to fill.
·
When there
were no more jars left to be filled, the oil stopped flowing.
·
As long as
their were vessels to be filled, the oil kept flowing.
·
But as soon
as the they ran out of jars to fill…the oil ran dry.
·
After she
filled all the jars, she went and told Elisha she did what he asked her to do.
·
Elisha then
told her to go sell the oil and pay off her debts. And she and her sons could
live off of what is left.
·
Keep in mind
that Elijah did not tell her this information on the front end. He just told
her to collect as many jars as she could.
·
He told her the
purpose for filling all the jars on the back end after the oil had stopped.
·
God often
times works the same way with us.
·
If she knew
that there was an endless supply of oil as long as she has empty vessels and
jars to fill, perhaps she would have collected even more.
·
We do not
know how many vessels she collected.
·
There was a
reason why the prophet did not tell her this beforehand..
·
God wants us
to obey him in faith!
·
As we obey
him and listen to him he blesses us with his abundance.
·
It is
interesting that immediately after the last cup was filled the oil stopped
flowing. They could not go and get more vessels to fill.
·
That is how
faith works – it works on the front end of the miracle and not the back end.
·
Some of you
want God to bless
·
All of us
have financial resources that we use for something.
·
Perhaps some
of you think and say: “Well when the Lord blesses me financially, I will give
to the ministry of New Heights”.
·
God says, I
will not bless you with more until you give the “little oil” you have to the
ministry of New heights.
·
Bring your
few fishes and loaves and Jesus will feed the 5000 with it.
·
When you give
10% or more of your money to the Lord you are creating empty jars for God to
fill.
·
When you keep
the little you have, there is nothing to fill….God will not poor out his oil of
abundance.
·
Jesus further
explained this principle in the parable of the talents…The one who invested the
five earned five more. The one who invested the two earned two more. But the
one who buried the one, lost it.
·
Jesus says
those who have will be given more when they give what they have away.
·
But those who
hold onto the little they have will loose it all.
·
Jesus
demonstrated God’s unlimited supply of abundance when he fed the five thousand
and again the four thousand with just a few fish and loaves of bread.
Matthew 14:13-21 says:
13When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by
boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on
foot from the towns. 14When Jesus landed and saw a large
crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15As evening
approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place,
and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the
villages and buy themselves some food."
16Jesus
replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to
eat."
17"We
have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.
18"Bring
them here to me," he said. 19And he directed the
people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and
looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to
the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20They
all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of
broken pieces that were left over. 21The number of those
who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
·
God’s
blessings are unlimited, but he always uses the prayers, faith and obedience of
his followers.
·
God never
works a miracle apart from the faith and actions of his children.

Romans 4:16-25 (pg. 797)
says:
16Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may
be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring—not only to those
who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the
father of us all. 17As it is written: "I have made
you a father of many nations."[a] He is our father in the sight of God, in
whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are
not as though they were.
18Against
all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations,
just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."[b] 19Without weakening
in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was
about a hundred years old—and that Sarah's womb was also dead. 20Yet
he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was
strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21being
fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22This
is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." 23The
words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone, 24but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for
us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25He
was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our
justification.

TRUE NEW HEIGHTS
ILLUSTRATIONS:
·
Last week I
told you that I would tell us some real life miracles that God has provided for
·
While I do
not have time to detail every miracle and blessing, I will give you the to most
prominent ones that have merit in building up our faith in Christ today.
1.The planting of
·
A Church by
the name of
·
I just
graduated from Seminary and was looking for a church to plant.
·
Numerous
persons were offered the church over the years, but nobody wanted it because it
was in the “wrong location” and lacked potential for growth.
·
They said,
the church had no future to grow, but I had a hunch that this little church of
20 person could grow, and grow we did!
·
As a new
church plant,
·
·
And dozens of
people came to faith in Christ in those first few years.
·
·
Over 200
people have come to faith in Christ at
·
·
Not to mention,
dozens of marriages have been saved from divorce.
·
·
People have
been called into ministry.
·
·
Countless
persons have become the persons that God created them to be.
·
·
Because we
outgrew our small church building in
·
·
There were
people who thought we were crazy and that the church was going to die if it
went mobile.
·
·
We had to set
up and tear down every Sunday.
·
But I and the
leadership team knew it was the best thing for our church body. God was
preparing us for something awesome and we were learning how to pay the price!
·
·
We did this
for three years until we realized that we needed a permanent church building to
call home.
·
·
We began
praying for a bigger, permanent church building.
·
·
In all we
were mobile setting up and tearing down for 4 years.
·
·
IN A PRAYER
MEETING MUCH LIKE THIS ONE WE BEGAN PRAYING THAT GOD WOULD OPEN UP A BIGGER
PLACE OF MINISTRY FOR US.
·
·
WE STARTED
PRAYING IN JANUARY OF 2002
·
·
A few weeks later, In February of 2002, we
heard about this facility being for sale in
·
·
The price tag
originally was $825,000 and it was appraised for 1.2 million.
·
·
The square
footage was18,000 square feet.
·
·
In addition
we would need more than $45,000 to prepare the building for the Grand Opening.
·
·
We needed to
sell our existing church building at a very good price – close to a half
million dollars.
·
Most
real-estate agents told us that for a church to buy it, it was worth about
$350,000 – which would be about 150,000 short of what we needed.
·
·
WE WERE TOLD
THAT ONLY A DEVELOPER WOULD BUY THE LAND TO SELL CONDOS OR HOUSES.
·
·
Could we sell
our existing church building for nearly a half million dollars or where we in “
·
·
WE CONTIUNED
TO PRAY.
Over a six month period we had 6 prayer meetings in
all seeking God’s direction.
·
Was this our
dream built on smoke and thin air?
·
Or was this
God’s reality for us?
·
·
We would be
moving our church family almost 20 miles from our existing meeting place and
savage and 17 miles from where our existing church building in
·
·
Would our
core group make the drive?
·
·
Would we
loose People?
·
·
Would we
loose financial support?
·
·
Would we
loose ministry leaders?
·
·
The Iowa
Minnesota District of the Wesleyan church had to approve up selling our
existing building and the purchasing of this new facility?
·
The concern
was – did we have the financial base to support such a large facility?
·
·
Would the District
give us the o.k. to go face this giant and try to slay it?
·
·
I was later
told that we were only given permission by our District to sell our property
because…if we actually received $485,000 for that property which was appraised
for around $385,000, they figured God was in it!
THE NEXT STEP – I went to the congregation
and….
·
I carefully
outlined what purchasing this building would cost in terms of involvement,
time, money, and prayer.
·
·
I did not
candy coat it!
·
·
I clearly
laid it out in countless letters, e-mails, phone calls, sermons, and meetings
over the next 6 months.
·
WE VOTED AS A
CHURCH FAMILY A FEW DAYS LATER……THE VOTE CAME BACK TO MOVE – IT WAS UNANIMOUS
TO MOVE!
·
·
BUT MORE
IMPRESSIVE WERE THE FINANCIAL COMMITMENTS AND THE DEDICATION THE CHURCH FAMILY
MADE TO BE INVOLVED.
·
·
By that time,
we got word from the
·
·
A church
would have to buy it. But we were told by several real estate agents that deal
with church property that it was worth about $350,000 and no more that
$400,000.
·
·
We would
still be $100,000 short.
·
·
We continued
to pray for a miracle even though it looked bleak.
·
·
WE CONTIUNED
TO PRAY
·
·
In faith, we
made an offer of $695,000 on the property which was far below the asking price.
·
·
Another
church put in an offer the same day we did.
·
·
WE CONTIUNED
TO PRAY FOR GOD’S WILL TO BE DONE!
·
·
Shortly
after,
·
·
God gave us a
peace to pursue the additional parking lot.
·
·
THE AUXILIARY
PARKING LOT WAS LATER ADDED TO THE DEAL AND INCREASED THE PURCHASE PRICE BY
$25,000.
·
·
They received
are offer of $720,000 to be contingent on the sale of our property.
·
For this to
happen we would need$485,000. for our property, at least $100,000 over what the
experts thought we could get for it.
·
·
WE HAD
ANOTHER PRAYER MEETING.
·
·
WE MERELY
TRUSTED GOD TO EITHER OPEN OR CLOSE THIS DOOR ACCORDING TO HIS WILL, BUT WE
NEVER FLINCHED FROM THE CHALLENGE.
·
·
It probably
looked ludicrous from the outsider’s perspective.
·
·
I know of a
few pastors who thought we were crazy.
·
·
And maybe we
were, but we kept praying in faith!
·
·
Even before
then people thought we were nuts for meeting in two movie theatres and a school
when we already had our own paid for church building in
·
·
But if you
ask any of the core group members – why we met in the movie theatres and a
school – they will TELL YOU – IT PRPEPARED US TO KILL GOLIATH.
·
·
Sacrificing
by tearing town and setting up every Sunday, prepared us for the huge sacrifice
it would take to purchase and properly maintain this great facility.
·
·
LAST YEARS
CONQUERED GIANTS, BECOME THIS YEARS LIONS AND BEARS THAT PREPARE US TO FACE THE
NEXT GIANT GOLIATH IN OUR LIVES.
·
·
WE DIDN’T
KILL GOLIATH ON OUR OWN – GOD DID IT THROUGH US AS WE CHOSE TO BECOME EMPTY
VESSELS FOR HIS TO USE!
LET ME SHARE WITH YOU BREIFLY WHAT GOD DID FOR
US ONCE WE CHOSE TO PICK UP “THE SLING SHOT AND 5 STONES”:
1) GOD GAVE US A BURNING DESIRE TO OBEY HIM. WE HAVE PAYED OUR BUDGET
PAYMENTS EVER SINCE AFTER BEING CONFRONTED BY THE DISTRICT BOARD.
2)
3)
OUR
CHURCH BUILDING SOLD FOR $485,000 WHEN MOST REALESTATE AGENTS AND INVESTORS
TOLD US THAT PRICE WERE NOT POSSIBLE UNLESS WE SOLD IT TO A DEVELOPER TO BUILD
CONDEMENNIUMS ON.
·
The
NOTE: BY THE WAY, IT SOLD TO ANOTHER
·
TODAY AN
·
·
IT WAS A
BLACK/HISPANIC CHURCH THAT MATCHED THE NEIGHBORHOOD PERFECTLY.
·
4) THE REAL ESTATE AGENTS ORIGIANNLLY AGREED TO AN 8%
COMMISSION, BUT CHOSE SPLIT A 5% COMMISSION THEN SENT US A CHECK FOR $1,500 TO
MAKE THE DEAL WORK. IN ALL IT WAS TURNED OUT TO BE A 4.25% COMMISSION.
NOTE: This savings of nearly $20,000 covered
most of the purchase price for the additional parking lot.
5) OUR CHURCH FAMILY GAVE OVER $40,000 above their
regular tithes to buy and begin to rehab the church building.
6) WE
RECEIVED AND ADITIONAL $8,000 in outside gifts and grants.
·
OUR CHURCH
FAMILY DONATED THEIR LABOR AND TIME AT 7 WORK PARTIES.
·
·
SEVERAL CAME
IN DURING THE WEEK BEFORE AND AFTER WORK.
·
·
BECAUSE OF
DONATED LABOR AND DISCOUNTED MATERIALS, WE WERE ABLE TO PUT ON A NEW ROOF FOR
$6,000.
·
·
GOD PROVIDED
AN UNEXPECTED INCOME STREAM THROUGH THE
a. THEY rented a few classrooms from us during the week
for their EBD program.
b. This income has enabled to hire a custodian and to pay the majority of
our utilities.
c. The gas and heat bills are almost three times more
than what we were told they would be. But God provided the difference we did
not plan on before we moved in.
d. Within days of moving in here, an administrator from the school district
approached us about renting just a small portion of our facilities during the
school hours for $38,000 a year.
e. Without that income stream we would not have been
able to make it.
f. YET, GOD BROUGHT IT TO US.
g. IT ALSO KEPT US VISIBLE IN THE COMMUNITY.
NOTE: IT IS ALMOST AS IF GOD SAID, WOW – THEY
REALY STEPPED INTO DEEP WATER THIS TIME, I BETTER GO AND BIAL THEM OUT BEFORE
THEY DROWN.
GOD NEVER SHOWS UP UNTIL AFTER HIS CHILDREN
STEP OUT IN FAITH!
·
Moving from
·
·
We saw God
show up in many miraculous ways.
·
·
And the God
who brought us here is the God who will keep us here to advance the Kingdom.
·
·
·
This is God’s
will!
·
·
And as we
pray in unity and give God the “little oil” we have, we will see God’s
abundance all around us.
