WHEN JESUS COMES AGAIN – LIFE ON THE NEW EARTH

 “The judgment Seat”

June 17, 2007, Pastor Mike Barnett

·        The Bible says that when Jesus comes again. every person will be _____________________(judged) according to how they __________________(lived) their life.

John 5:28-29 (pg. 754) says:

28"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

·        God has ____________________________(delegated) judgment to His Son, Jesus Christ who will __________________(judge) the __________________(living) and the __________________(dead).”

John 5:22 says:

22 ”Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son”.

·        There is vast __________________________(difference) between the judgment of _________________(believers) and that of the _______________________(nonbeliever).

·        For the imperfect ________________________(believer) there lies ahead the judgment _________________(seat) of _____________________(Christ).

2 Cor. 5:10 says:

10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

·        For the imperfect ___________________(unbeliever), there is the inescapable prospect of standing before the ____________________ _____________________(Great White) Throne of Judgment.

Rev. 20:11 says:

 11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

·        It is neither possible nor necessary to compile an exact timetable for these awesome events; it is the absolute certainty of them that is important.

Hebrews 9:27 says:

27Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.

·        The scriptures recognize two kinds of judgment.

1) Eternal _____________________(destiny).

·        A person’s eternal destiny is already _________________________(determined) in this life, according to whether or not he or she has trusted Christ for salvation.

Romans 14:12 says:

12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

2. Eternal ____________________(rewards).

·        One day, we will all have to stand before a Holy God and give an account of our life here on earth.

·        The judgment seat of Christ is essentially his umpire seat.

·        The primary purpose of the judgment seat for believers is to _____________________(assess) and _____________________(reward) believers for the manner in which they have _______________(used) their _________________(time)___________________(talents) and ___________________(treasure) here on earth.

·        The basis on which we will be judged is stated in clear terms: “that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether ___________________(good) or __________________(bad).”

·        _____________________(Motives) as well as _____________________(deeds) will be taken into account on Judgment day.

1 Corinthians 4:5 says:

5Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 9pg. 808) says:

10By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. 14If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

·        Some claim that the material in 1 Corinthians 3 describes purgatory, where the believer is put through a fiery judgment to purge out the dross of sin – NOT TRUE.

·        Clearly this passage the judgment of the believer’s works. To see if they are “wood, hay, stubble,” or “gold, silver, precious stones”.

·        This passage deals with whether our works endure or are burned up.

·        It is the works, not the saints themselves, that are tested in the purging fire.

·        Only the ____________________(works), not the believers themselves, must go through the ___________________(fire).

·        Rewards are what is at issue here, not entrance into Heaven.

·        Everything in Scripture indicates that the believer’s entrance to Heaven occurs ________________________(immediately) upon death.

·        What do gold, silver, and costly stones symbolize?

GOLD, SILVER AND COSTLY STONES SYBOLIZE WHAT WE DO IN THIS BODY:

1.  Our _______________________(testimony) to Christ –

Philippians 2:16 says:

16as you hold out[a] the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

2.  Our _______________________(suffering) for Christ –

1 Peter 4:13 says:

13But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed

Luke 12:42-43 says:

13But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

Revelation 2:10 says:

10Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.

3.  Our _______________________(service) for Christ –

1 Corinthians 3:8 says:

8The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.

Hebrews 6:10 says:

10God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

5. Our ____________________________(generosity) to Christ.

2 Corinthians 9:6 says:

 6Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 says:

17Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

6. Our _____________(use) of __________________(time) for Christ.

Ephesians 5:15-16 says:

15Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

7. Our _________________________(exercise) of spiritual _____________________(gifts).

1 Peter 4:10 says:

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.

8. Our _______________ _________________(self discipline) for Christ

1 Corinthians 9:24-25 says:

 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

9. Our ______________________(winning) of ____________________(souls) for Christ.

Colossians 4:5 says:

5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

1 Thessalonians 2:19 says:

19For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?

WHEN JESUS COMES AGAIN, WILL HE FIND YOU LIVING FOR HIM OR LIVING FOR YOURSELF?

·        Some will be _________________________(ashamed) when Jesus comes because of __________________________(unfaithfulness) to Him.

1 John 2:28 says:

 28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

1 Cor. 3:15 says:

15If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

Hebrews 10:26-27 says:

26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

·        Because all believers are fully justified in Christ, there is no _________________________(condemnation).

Romans 8:1-2 says:

 1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,[a] 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

·        When Jesus comes again, no ___________________ ____________________ _________________________(post-mortem suffering) is necessary to atone for remaining sin; all our sins are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 61:10 says:

10 I delight greatly in the LORD;
       my soul rejoices in my God.
       For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
       and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness,
       as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,
       and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Psalm 16 says:

1 Keep me safe, O God,
       for in you I take refuge.

 2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord;
       apart from you I have no good thing."

 3 As for the saints who are in the land,
       they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. [b]

 4 The sorrows of those will increase
       who run after other gods.
       I will not pour out their libations of blood
       or take up their names on my lips.

 5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup;
       you have made my lot secure.

 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
       surely I have a delightful inheritance.

 7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
       even at night my heart instructs me.

 8 I have set the LORD always before me.
       Because he is at my right hand,
       I will not be shaken.

 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
       my body also will rest secure,

 10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, [c]
       nor will you let your Holy One [d] see decay.

 11 You have made [e] known to me the path of life;
       you will fill me with joy in your presence,
       with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
