“Jesus and Others Did It Anyway” #8

THEME: At times, you will be tempted to stay in your comfort zone and not take a risk, but choose to jump out of the boat anyway knowing that the safest place to be is in the center of God’s will!

Matthew 14:22-33 (pg. 692) says:

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat was already a considerable distance[a] from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.27But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." 28"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." 29"Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" 32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

  • When Peter saw Jesus walking on the water, He got excited and said to Jesus, “Tell me to come to you”.

  • Peter knew that if he did what Jesus commanded him to do he could not fail – that is Lordship!

  • Peter was the only one that got out of the boat, because he trusted Jesus more than the other disciples.

  • Peter had the grand experience of walking on the water…he was actually walking on the water toward Jesus.

  • But when he saw the wind, he became afraid and beginning to sink, He cried out “Lord, save me”.

  • Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.

  • Instead of saying “thatta boy Peter, way to go” – Jesus rebuked him for looking at the wind and becoming afraid.

  • Jesus rebuked Peter in front of the other disciples and said: “You of little faith…Why did you doubt?”

  • Most of the time when I read this passage, I focus on the fact that Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and began to sink.

  • The fact is however, Peter is the only other person besides Jesus Christ in the history of the world to have walked on water!

  • Two people have walked on water: Jesus and Peter!

  • I can’t prove this from scripture, but I have a hunch as to why the wind possibly came up when it did as Peter was walking toward Jesus.

  • Jesus was consistently testing the disciples and preparing them for ministry.

  • If it was not for the wind, Peter would have successfully walked over to Jesus with ease!

  • Jesus could have calmed the wind – he did it before.

  • Could it be that Jesus caused  the wind to blow extra hard, or at the very least allowed it to blow to test Peter’s faith?

  • We do not know for sure, but we do know that Jesus was preparing Peter for ministry and we know Peter had a problem with pride.

  • Jesus looked for opportunities to teach Peter both faith and humility.

  • I can identify with Peter quite a bit.

  • Like Peter, I seem to find myself in precarious situations and sometimes seemingly alone.

  • I jumped out of the safe confines of my boat 11 years ago and my wife jumped with me.

  • 11 years ago today, Michelle and I pulled into Burnsville, Minnesota to plant a new church called New Heights Christian Fellowship.

  • We were married for 29 days and just got back from our honey moon in Hawaii 20 days previously when we arrived.

  • As soon as we came back from our honeymoon, we began packing for the big move from San Diego, California to Burnsville, Minnesota.

  • Nothing could prepare us for the wind chill that was just a few degrees above zero when we arrived.

  • We looked at each other like, “What did we just do?”

  • The fact is, we had other offers to pastor and plant churches and could have stayed in Southern California.

  • Have you ever had “buyer’s remorse”?

  • But that feeling quickly went away because we were young, naive, and in love.

  • The next day we went to the Burlington Coat Factory and bought winter coats, boots and long johns.

  • We had jumped out of the boat all right and it was either sink or swim…

  • …WALKING ON THE WATER WAS NOT AN OPTION, unless we are taking Prior Lake in January.

  • I will be honest with you, deep down, I thought I was going to walk on water.

  • What I mean by that is, I thought that within 10 years New Heights Christian Fellowship, would be a mega church over 1000 people.

  • So you could say that I sunk, when the winds blew.

  • And yes, the winds blew and the waves rose.

  • Problems have come….trials have come….sufferings have come.

  • We have relocated to five different locations, this one being our last and final destination.

  • Some of my Wesleyan Pastor friends laughed at us when we met in a movie theatre.

  • At the time I thought it was a good idea since we outgrew our little Burnsville building that was only 5000 square feet.

  • The Nursery was a little bigger than Michelle’s wardrobe closet.

  • I did not know that a mobile church in Minnesota was suicide.

  • I had no idea that moving to five locations within a four year span could actually kill a church.

  • I had no idea you were not suppose to be a mobile church in this culture because it is so common place where I grew up in California.

  • I guess you could say, that there were winds I created myself.

  • But God was faithful and he kept us safe against all the odds of dying which are pretty good in this culture.

  • In fact, one statistician with the southern Baptist reported to me that 6 out of 10 new evangelical church plants in Minnesota to not make it past 5 years and 8 out of do not make it past 10 years.

  • One of my favorite verses is Jude 1:24-25, that God will keep me from falling, when I take a risk for him.

24To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.  (pg. 866)

  • But then there were winds that I had nothing to do with, they simply blew my way even though I wished they wouldn’t have.

  • Within 18 months my Mom, Dad and wife all had cancer.

  • My wife and my Mom are cancer free and my Dad is with the Lord.

  • I have seen parishioners come and go and it is never easy to see them go.

  • We did not become a mega church as projected.

  • It would have been easy to call this operation a ship wreck at first glance.

  • But when you look below the surface of things you see the facts.

  • Even though 6 out of 10 new evangelical church plants in Minnesota to not make it past 5 years and 8 out of do not make it past 10 years…..

  • …We made it, not being a major brand name like Lutheran, Baptist or even Assembly of God.

  • Nobody has heard of  the Wesleyan Church out here.

  • In 11 years, we have had over 200 people give professions of faith in Christ for the first time.

  • We have seen people become sanctified as they were delivered from the bondage of sin, addictions and pesty habits that competed for their soul.

  • We have seen prayers answered.

  • We have seen people healed from both emotional and physical afflictions.

  • We have seen countless marriages restored to health that were headed for divorce court.

  • We have seen leaders develop and people have become “the persons God created them to be”.

  • So maybe New Heights has not had an easy road to hoe – but at least we attempted to get out of the boat and walk on a little water for the glory of God.

  • Water that we would have not treaded otherwise.

LESSONS LEARNED BY JUMPING OUT OF THE BOAT:

1) Only jump out of the boat to get _____________(closer) To _______________(Jesus) - No other reason will keep you in the water when it gets cold and rough.

Matthew 16:24-27 (pg. 694) says:

24Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

·        Jump because it is God’s will for you to jump – nothing else will keep you in the water when the _______________________(wind) picks up and the _______________________(waves) get bigger.

·        If you jump for people, you will be __________________________(disappointed) and hurt.

·        If you jump for God, you jump for all the right reasons.

2.  Not _______________________(everybody) is going to jump into the water with you - if you jump, you must be _______________________(prepared) to jump ___________________(alone).

Luke 9:57-62 (Pg. 734) says:

57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." 58Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." 59He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."  60Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."  61Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good bye to my family." 62Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

·        I have never taken a poll to discern who will jump with me before I got out of the boat

·        I have always jumped when I had the opportunity to jump for God without paying attention to what the people around me were doing.

·        Since being a “Christ follower”, my decision to take a risk has never been contingent on what other people were saying, thinking or doing.

·        I have always been prepared to jump alone when God asked me to.

·        I am just surprised when people actually jump with me!

3. Somebody will jump with you, but you never _____________________(know) _______________(who) its going to be for sure until its time to jump.

Matthew 21:28-31 (pg. 698) says:

28"What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' 29" 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30"Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go.  31"Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered.

·        Over the years, I have had some people tell me that they were going to jump, but didn’t. They stayed in the boat.

·         And some people who told me nothing and remained silent, actually ended up jumping with me!

·        Some people told me, they were not going to jump, but ultimately did jump when it came time to take a risk for Jesus.

·        I prefer those who say they will not jump, or say nothing, but ultimately jump anyway – and so does God!

·        The fact is, those you thought would jump don’t and those you didn’t give much of a chance to jump will….you just never really know until it is time to jump!

·        I have given the Minnesotan’s a hard time over the years for being slow to change and take risk, but when they decide to jump they really jump and stay in the water with you.

·        Minnesotan’s are gritty and tough when they choose to be.

4. Jumping is the ________________(easy) part, it is ____________(staying) in the _______________(water) with Jesus and your church family that is the real challenge.

Galatians 6:9 says:

9Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

·        The average protestant pastor in America has a tenure of less than 3 years at any given church.

·        I have been tempted to resign more than once. In addition….

·        Over the 11 years I have had four offers to pastor other churches – all of which I did not seek.

·        The last one was the hardest. I was offered a staff position in a church that was less than 20 minutes from my mom’s house where I grew up and I had friends in that church.

·         My brother lived just down the street from the church.

·        The pastor called just a few days before we were to vote to move to Farmington and buy this building.

·         He told me I could give him my answer after the vote.

·        I called back and said no – I knew I had to continue to pastor New Heights regardless of the outcome of the vote.

·        The pastor told me I was nuts for turning this position down and he was not the only one who thought so.

·        Jesus was asking me to stay in the water with Him.

·        God was also asking me to stay in the water with these beautiful Minnesotan’s that chose to jump in the water with me these past 11 years.

·        Since we moved here in Farmington, I have not been walking on water, but I have stayed in the water with Jesus and with you.

·        Jesus stuck out his hand and caught me before I drowned and he is holding me close to his chest.

·        Soon, I feel I will be able to rise up and walk with him on the water again for the glory of God.

·        I thank God for all of you who have jumped in the water with me and Michelle.

·        Sometimes the waves have gotten pretty big, other times, It has gotten pretty chilly…but many people have stayed in the water with us.
