I am not a killer

mood: worried

I read a disturbing article in Newsweek: Loving the U.S., And Hating It Too: For South Koreans, the story of Cho Seung-Hui underscores a nation's ambivalent relationship with America. Koreans are worried that this one crazy's actions will provoke racial prejudice in the US against all Koreans and Korean-Americans.

I sincerely hope these fears are unfounded.

I've seen bigotry up close in all its ugly glory. My own father is a racist bigot when it comes to African-Americans. It tears me apart when I hear hate spewing from his mouth in the guise of "humor." And yet, and I don't want to minimize his bigotry in the least by saying this, he's relatively tame in his racism. To my knowledge he's never actually hurt a black individual in any way. His ignorance and fear makes him ooze his ugliness from afar.

I grew up in Eagan and Burnsville, two middle-class Twin Cities suburbs. I was exposed to racism from a very early age. Even though I'm only half Korean, I was still chased around by kids slanting their eyes with their fingers and saying, "ching-chong! Ching-chong!" or the ever-popular, "Chinese! Japanese! Dirty knees!" Whatever that means. Later I experienced a subtler kind of racism in high school from other Asians. "Are you Korean?" "Half Korean." "Oh." That exchange would be followed by a condescending/smirking/false-pity look. Maybe even an almost imperceptible snort of.... what? Contempt? I don't understand that to this day. I got the same look/snort from the Korean ladies at an Asian grocery store I used to go to in St. Paul. Then there was the jackass at a party who was ranting off about Asians in general while I was sitting five feet away from him. I don't even remember what he was saying, I just remember getting so mad I wanted to hit the guy but since I didn't want to ruin Chad's party we just left.

Then VT happened. I can't (don't want to) believe that anyone would be so idiotic as to funnel their anger for Cho against an entire race of people.

How do you write "I am not a killer" in Korean? I want to put that on a t-shirt.

This is how we do

mood: happy

I witnessed the greatest hockey game of my life last night.

We sat in the oohlala Club Level seats. That was my first and probably last time I'll ever sit there. What do you get by paying twice the price for your Club Level ticket? Carpet on the floor. A guy who brings your drinks from the bar. A free program. The company of lots of people who couldn't care less about the game itself.

We did sit in a slightly less lame section in that at least 80% of the people were genuinely excited. Hockey fans? Probably not. Every single time an Anaheim player would get control of the puck someone behind us on both sides would go, "HIT HIM!" Every time. Even the completely inappropriate times, like during a line change. I appreciate the enthousiasm, sirs, but you obviously have no idea that hockey is a game in which things like strategy and planning are involved. This ain't roller derby -- you don't hit someone just because they're standing there. Then there were the lame-os next to and in front of us. Dude next to me was texting on his phone the whole time and lady in front of me looked like she was going to fall asleep. I really think the only reason she didn't get to nod off was because I was screaming my head off behind her.

And hey Ducks fans -- I'm sorry your team is a bunch of punks. Honestly, I'd be embarrassed if I were you. Double-teaming? Suckerpunches? You have got to be kidding me.

And to those refs -- you should all be immediately fired. You cannot just make shit up as you go along. Calling off a goal for interference in the crease is only valid IF THERE'S A GUY IN THE CREASE. Roughing calls are fine IF SOMEONE IS ACTUALLY TOUCHING SOMEONE ELSE. Fighting penalty? Fine, as long as you send the actual fight STARTER to the box. And hey idiots, pay attention. At one point the Ducks' net was completely off for a good minute of regulation. There were more bad calls than good last night. It was pathetic.

Even so, the Wild still played a good clean game and won fair and square. Handily, even.

I learned how to knit today!

Fun fact: playing One Winged Angel in the background of any task suddenly makes whatever you're doing seem MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. It's like my knitting is going to save the world from nuclear annihilation.
