I also bought a 67 Firebird 400 4 speed, it was a dog, it would do nothing until 4000 rpm and then take off like crazy. It also had a lift kit and stiff shocks in the rear so it was like riding a lumber wagon down hill. Also a pain was the little steering wheel some one put on it, and with manual steering it was a real pain.
In 1976 I bought a 72 Lemans GT in Detroit Lakes. It was brown and did not look like much. It had a column shift and a bench seat , but looking a little deeper it had a factory tack so lets check this out. It had a 400 4BR engine (std GTO engine) dual exhaust 355 Posi. It was a sleeper it also had manual brakes and manual steering which was a pain because it was a heavy car. I also ran this at the drag with a best of 14.65 at 89 MPH. Unfortunately it finally rusted out so I hauled to the crusher.
Another car I owned was a 71 TransAm, it had of course a 455 HO but with a Automatic Column shift I had it fixed up so it looked good but I decided to sell it, too many cars.
In 1980 I needed a daily driver so I bought a new 1980 Sunbird with a 4 cyl and 4 speed. It was a good little car and it got me around just fine for many years. Since then with everything going Unibody I have gone to buying trucks. I have a hard time relating Pontiac of old to the current Pontiacs. I am sure Mopar fans probably have a hard time relating HemiCuda's to the current crop of Neon's.
