This is a brief discussion, giving Hilding some new ideas and perhaps explaining to others the importance of this part of theEagle Court of Honor.] Subj: USA: Eagle Scout Charge From: hilding holroyd Greetings to all (again): My son's Eagle Court of Honor is January 21, 1995. I am looking for a "different" Eagle Scout charge. I have copies of the ceremonies from Woods Wisdom and theinfo from the Eagle Tips in the archives. If anyone has one (even one that I can modify from a Queen's Scout ceremony) I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks for your help on this one, too. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: Jim Van Hecke I guess I would rather see you change some other part of the ceremony to include your desired change rather that modify the Eagle Scout Charge. To me it is a traditional part of an Eagle Scout Court of Honor, and I have never known it to be modified. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: hilding holroyd Jim Van Hecke writes: > > I guess I would rather see you change some other part of the ceremony to > include your desired change rather that modify the Eagle Scout Charge. Let me explain more about what I desire regarding an Eagle Scout Charge. I had sent my earlier message out very quickly just to get it out on the net. I come from a family HEAVILY committed to Scouting. There has been someone in the family registered in Scouts since 1910. In those years there are now 4 generations of Eagles and my son is the 14th in the family. I have also been to many other Eagle Courts of Honor. Sometimes there have been other "Eagle Scout Charges" used that are not in the ceremonies part of the Woods Wisdom. There really is nothing in the regulations that says what specific things should be read at a ceremony. Frankly, there is nothing that says that there MUST be an Eagle CofH. It is a custom (and a very good one at that) whereby we recognise achievement. The charges listed in Woods Wisdom are very good. I have used them before. The ceremonies there are quite nice, too. I have used them (somewhat modified though). What I am looking for is something that is meaningful to my son and sometimes the stock ceremonies just do not fit the bill. The ceremony that we are planning IS going to be a bit different. My mother is presenting the award. She received the Golden Eaglet (GSA) in 1939 and is "the oldest living Eagle in the family". She was quite shocked when I asked her to do this. (Continue with presentation of badge) Sorry about the length, but I wasn't sure if you wanted the Eagle Scout Oath included or not. I was told (during planning) that certain things HAD to be done: the ceremony had to be officially opened, I had to be given the charge and take the oath, the badge had to be formally presented, and the ceremony had to be officially closed. Everything else that happened was up to me (if I wanted it, it would be done (within reason)). Tell your son congratulations for me, I wish I could be there. It was my son's. Of course, I highly approved. I am hoping that more of my family will attend the CofH, but might not due to driving distance during prime snow times. However, with my mom here, we will have 3 generations represented. Can't have the fourth for my grandfather (Eagle 1915) died in the 40's. So, I am not going to cut the charge out, just trying to get something that will appeal a bit more to my son. After all, it us HIS day, no matter what kind of time I am having planning the thing. Sorry about the long explanations. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: "Chris Haggerty, Sierra Vista, Arizona" Hilding, Create your own Charge/Challenge based upon the individual scout envolved. Have someone who is a good speaker (like a youth minister) who knows your son do it. Or just have someone who is a good speaker do it. Mike Walton did one for one of my boys via VCR (neither of us could afford to get him and Jessi out to Arizona at the time). Consider customizing other parts of the ceremony. For both of my boys I did the trail of the Eagle with slides taken during their scouting days ( you can make slides from photos). I took the liberty of changing much of the text to again customize it for my boys. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: CRAIG WILLIAM NOAH Hilding, Here is the text of the charge that I was given: I have the honor to give you the Eagle charge on the occasion of your elevation to the highest rank in scouting. The Boy Scouts of all nations constitute one of the most wholesome and significant influences in the world's history. You have been conted worhty of this high rank in the Boy Scouts of America. Your responsibility goes beyond your fellow scouts: it extends to your God and your Country. America has many fine things to offer you and your children after you; but these good things depend for the most part on the quality of her citizens. Our country has a great past. You can help make the future still greater. I charge you to undertake your citizenship with solemn dedication. Be a leader, but lead only toward the best. Lift up every task you do, and every office you hold to the high level of service to God and your fellow men. So live and serve that those who know you will be inspired to the finest living. We have too many who use their strength and their brains to exploit others and gain selfish ends. I charge you to be among those who dedicate their hearts and hands to the common good. Build America on the sound foundations of clean living, honest work, unselfish citizenship, and reverence for God. Then, whatever others do, you will leave behind you a record of which you may be justly proud. Eagle candidate ___________, I charge you to enter this Eagle Scout Brotherhood hoding before you the ideals of honor and service. By repetition of the Eagle Scout Promise before your fellow members you become an Eagle Scout.
