He posted his questions to the Scouts-L list which served as catalysts for the new version of this collection of files. Charlie wrote several times during his service project period, and became an Eagle Scout late in 1994.] Subject: Future Eagle From: Charles Nusbaum Fellow Scouters, I'm close. Really close. Four more merit badges and a service project. I'm close. But not close enougth to know everything. I have many questions, and I hope some Eagle Scouts can help answer them too. Is there a time minimum on the service project? [Editor's Note: See EagleTip # 1 ] Is the Board of Review a painstaking event? [Editor's Note: See EagleTip # 1 ] How big is an Eagle Scout Court of Honor? [Editor's Note: See EagleTip # ] Those are just a few questions. Most have been answered by my wonderful Scoutmaster. =) I'd like to get opinions on my service project... here goes the basic plan: A major clothing drive. Gather between eight (8) to twelve (12) troops located throughout the city as drop-off points. Collect all of the clothing and donate it to orphanges, elderly homes, or United Way. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: WKUVX2::WALTOML "Settummanque, the blackeagle" Charles Nusbaum writes: > I'm close. It seems that another Scout has already chosen and had approved a clothing drive in the same area that I am in and has it planned for the same month as I. This is very upsetting because I had gotten so many compliments and tips from other Scouters (I really appreciate those!). I am asking for any ideas that any of you may have for Eagle Service Projects. Not too big, but well-sized to make a difference. I'd really appreciate suggestions because I set a goal for myself to earn my Eagle before I turn fifteen and I'm fourteen now. Many good projects can't be done in the winter. Thank you. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: "Michael F. Bowman" Charles, Your willingness to spring back from dissapointment is heartening! Many old-timers could take a lesson . . . Anyway, are there any retirement centers close to where you live, particularly religious or government subsidized? If so, see whether any of them have garden plots for residents. Many are using gardening as an activity to residents because of its theraphy value and because its just plain fun. If these two questions are answered in the affirmative, then see whether they could use a garden shed to store tools, seeds, etc. We've had a couple successful Eagle projects where the candidate organized the construction of the shed, stocked it with tools and provisioned it with seeds in metal storage containers. Hardware and garden center stores were very willing to donate to the cause. Lumber came from construction site left overs. In all the cost was minimal and the joy immeasurable for many folks confined to the homes. Leadership opportunities in planning, coordinating and carrying out the projects abounded. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: Charles Nusbaum To all who have given advice to me regarding my Eagle Service Project, I can't do that clothing drive. Another Scout in the same district just down the street from me has chosen and had approved the same project. I have, without delay, chosen another project. Outlined below is that project: Book Collection A) Create a flyer and pass it out to local residents. B) On the specified date, walk through the neighborhood and pick up the bags with books in them. The bags should have the flyer attached somehow to identify its contents. C) Go through the books and repair ones, clean ones, or throw out the really bad ones. D) Depending upon the amount of books collected, donate childrens books to childrens x upsetti`@ &>zBFZn~*nf j`^_5P$@ D4? [see appropriate EagleTip files, since all of those subjects have been broken down] This file explains in a summary form those answers. I can answer how big the Eagle Court of Honor is, since it's not in *that* version (it will be in the present one that I've been editing off and on during the summer and past spring). The Eagle Scout Court of Honor is a BIG DEAL. It is larger, longer and more intense than the run-of-the-mill Court of Honor or awards program. That's because that the ONLY thing that should be presented during the Eagle Court is the Eagle Scout Badge (and if those Eagles have earned Palms, then the palms should be awarded as well). > I'd like to get opinions on my service project... here > goes the basic plan: A major clothing drive. Gather > between eight (8) to twelve (12) troops located > throughout the city as drop-off points. Collect all of > the clothing and donate it to orphanges, elderly homes, > or United Way. > > ^^^^^ How do you like it? ^^^^^ The question is not how do WE like it, Charlie...it's how do YOU like it and more importantly, does it meet a need that YOU can solve by yourself or with the assistance of others. Remember that the Eagle Project is NOT a "exercise in how much Scouting you can do". It is a LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT FINAL EXAM in the best sense of that phrase. *You* must be the leader. That requires more than the placing of a couple of phone calls and standing there in your best shirt come project day. You must do the coordination or arrange for that coordination to happen. You must do the planning for a "Plan B" if the Plan don't work out the way you want it (for instance, what happens when you don't have Scouts for 8 points but you do for 5? What if there's already a committment from a orphange to get their clothing donated to them from a major retailer (like Sears) in their town in lieu of a cash donation? What if folks want to give your Scouts or yourself money instead of clothing? Those things MUST be thought-through and decided upon BEFORE the project (it can't be a "last minute decision") ). The Eagle Project is designed for you to take those things you've learned and observed from your years as a Scout and apply them to a community or city issue, problem or situation. Those questions that they ask in the Eagle Service Project Workbook should help and guide you as you go through the project. (I think your project is a GREAT one, Charlie, if you're looking for personal comments) Let us all know how you're progressing...perhaps we can use your "personal experiences" in the form of a "daily log" (you know, like the one that Captain Picard does each day aboard the Enterprise *hehehe*)...it would help other Eagle candidates if they can READ what you had to do, how soon you did it, and the pitfalls in doing what you did...think about it and let us know if you (and hey, you OTHER Eagle/Gold Candidates...you can do this, too!) are interested in doing this. (the only thing I would ask, Charlie, if you would commit to posting a note EVERY DAY you work on your project, so that we can get a true set of postings reflecting the time period as well as the content!) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 3 & t>zBFZn~*nf j`^_5 P$@0E4@A0ERHH[` W66ubY0@&(*.,e( Pa<> ?? @"pp"pp"pp[` W6u)Y" p246:8e( Pa@B ? @"pp"pp"pp( WOPFdGN';4`tuF%H =A5RTN_5_[ 0CLhK1.GEOEuCLK1`GEClock 1 '_&5U_!4[.Aku;SCRANK.GEOES[ khScrpGEOSuScrapbook$= b&:N_` Wll?Y#p$&(,*m(P<<a.0}< % pp"pp" ?2@@AH@Q@^T@@Y@{@=@z@PlEX@l@@@@8@@@@+@P;H,@A@B@C@@S@@k@yX@@-@@@G@@@Py@@u@_@>@7@riod, and bame an Eagl Scout late 1994.] Sub"pp"pp~R _ l @ @ " / < I V c p @ ' 4 [ @ u N h @ homes.
